MAGNOLIA POINT PRESERVE

In the heart of Melbourne, tucked away east of the airport, Apollo Boulevard, and the railroad but west of South Magnolia Avenue and Almar homes lies twenty-two acres of undeveloped property that has escaped the frenzy of construction for nearly a century.
This property is being threatened with development of nine 10,000 square foot warehouses. The project includes "moonscaping" the area, removing all but a few dozen trees to be replaced by saplings in containers. However, the owner has expressed an interest in selling this acreage. The Trust for Public Lands, and our own EELS (Environmentally Endangered Lands) program have stepped up to support the purchase of this precious region. Now your help is needed.
Please take the time to make a step in the right direction by sending Melbourne City Council members a message about the importance of establishing a Nature Park in the heart of Melbourne. Citywide support is essential to help make this acquisition a reality.

I am 100% in favor of making this land a natural preserve. I think it is long over due and urge all residents of Melbourne and Brevard county to voice their support for this much needed public land.
It's time to get some balance between construction and preservation.
Even better, it is time to halt construction for a while. I am TIRED of seeing beautiful trees cut down to build more strip shopping centers when there are vacant buildings all over this county going unoccupied and unused for years. It is shameful and wasteful, unsightly, and completely selfish on the part of the special interest & construction types who do not care that the natural beauty of this land is being destroyed and is unrecoverable. Not to mention the traffic congestion that has resulted with no end in sight...don't get me started on that...
The mountain bike trail was planned and developed with minimal impact to trees and vegetation that covered both sides of the railroad tracks and flowed nicely through beautiful Oak Hammocks and palmetto bushes. It was so nice that other people that visited the area started using the trail for running and walking their dogs. I have not been back since the hurricanes but would like to see it preserved for everyone to enjoy. Please consider biking as a primary activity so that this preserve could be well supported.
I was at the City Council meeting last Tuesday night and I was appalled at how the people who got up to talk were treated. The Mayor flipped through papers while John Emery was speaking, and barely looked at him until he barked out the thirty second warning, it was really rude. The other group trying to get sidewalks for their street were really nervous too and the whole scene was too stressful. Everybody needed to lighten up, these are people trying to make a difference. They are voters and taxpayers, and also have the guts to do something about things they see that needs fixing. They should not be subjected to intimidating tactics from these politicians.
This is a bunch of ******** People that get involved in their government should be treated with respect, otherwise why would anyone else want to get involved if this is what they can expect. Whose government is it anyway? No wonder people are disgusted.
An about this Magnolia thing, what gives there? If the owner wants to sell and these organizations want to help, what is the problem??????? Mark Larusso mentioned him and the City Manager looking for funding but .... lets see...he said something about a hurdle they couldn't get over. How much more vague could he get? Something really stinks here.
Fed up in Melbourne
yikes, I guess it's surprising to see how intense things get in these meetings. On the bright side, funding for the bike trail up US#1 is set, the first portion to be at the East end of Laurie Street. And guess what, the west end of Laurie Street dead ends at the North portion of the hoped for Preserve. A lovely loop through the wooded area could be had, and a connector to Babcock as well. Think positive.....Peg
The pictures of Magnolia Point Preserve remind me of pictures of old
Florida. They are breathtaking. I live on Sanibel Island and we have the JN Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, but I am not sure that I have captured the pictures that appear on your web-site. Please do all you can to let this acreage remain as it is. We have enough concrete in Florida.
The wildlife here needs space too.
Thanks you.
